What happens inside an cell?
| A voltaic cell employs a spontaneous oxidation–reduction reaction as a source of energy. It is constructed to separate the reaction physically into two half-reactions, one involving oxidation and the other reduction, with electrons moving from the oxidation half-reaction through the external circuit to the reduction half-reaction. | ![]() Look again at Figure1 and note the labeling of the electrodes as anode and cathode; also note the direction of electron flow in the external circuit and the signs of the electrodes. Note too the migration of ions in the solutions. |
